Memoir Meets Musical—‘Fun Home’ Comes to Segerstrom this Week
By archaicpress@gmail.com / on August 2nd, 2017 / in Entertainment, FeaturedEarlier this year we got a glimpse at what the Segerstrom Center for the Arts had in store for its 2017 season, and “Fun Home” immediately made its way to the top of our list. Part musical, part memoir, this show brings to life the story of famous cartoonist Alison Bechdel and it is one of those shows that leaves everything on the stage. From the family funeral home to the father that raised her while hiding his own secrets along the way, everything is up for grabs as Bechdel relives three important seasons of her life. And now after much waiting, “Fun Home” makes its way to Costa Mesa, CA this week for a limited time engagement through August 6th.
This marks the Tony Award-Winning musical’s first national tour after making a big splash in the 2015 awards season, claiming the title of Best Musical amongst its many awards and nominations. And with such a powerful story told by a talented cast, it’s no wonder why the hype around “Fun Home” continues to grow.
Told as one continuous story, without intermission, “Fun Home” takes audiences on a journey through Bechdel’s life, told from her perspective as an adult. Three actresses are cast in the role of Alison, each playing Bechdel at a specific age in her life. And though it’s told with her dark humor and musical finesse, this musical carries powerful themes that has audiences crying at the stage doors.
Audiences in Los Angeles and Orange County will have eight opportunities to catch the show now through August 6th, as the musical has shows nightly with added matinees Saturday and Sunday (August 5th & 6th).
“Fun Home” debuted August 1st, 2017 and continues through Sunday August 6th at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa, CA. For more information on the musical please visit www.scfta.org, or purchase your tickets at the door. Box Offices are open prior to every performance and tickets start at only $29.
